March Guest Speaker - Richard Nylon

Recognised as one of Australia’s most talented milliners, Richard Nylon of Melbourne created highly original couture headwear that has been described as ‘wearable art of innovative design and imagination’.

Richard’s distinctive designs result from his devotion to investigating and experimenting with any materials and methods, both traditional and unconventional, that allowed him to push the boundaries of millinery practice.

Rachael Hart is a bespoke Milliner and Interior Designer.

She is the current Vice President of The Millinery Association of Australia.

The label RACHAEL HART was launched in 2006, focusing on both men and women’s custom hats, and on trend bespoke millinery released biannually, with a collection of ready to wear casual hats once per year. RACHAEL HART headwear is available in her retail store/studio in Yarrawonga, Victoria.

The Interior Design background brings an architectural feel to her headwear, focusing on the form, proportion, line and balance of the piece, combined with the colour and texture of the materials. It is this balance of these elements that elevate her designs and collaborate to complete outfit.

Internationally renowned and nationally her loyal clients have accumulated many Fashions on the Field wins and she has high achievements for entries within pier focussed competitions.

Rachael has always been a self-employed creative, dealing with the highs and lows of customer service, trends and economic change, having to learn to adapt product to the market whilst still maintaining a love for her skill. She has a design for market background and years of experience teaching design and concept development at tertiary level.

Whilst you will most likely see Rachael dressed head to toe in black, her favourite colour is actually
‘RACHAEL’ Pink!

MEET YOUR 2023 MILLINERY AUSTRALIA COMMITTEE Mary MEET YOUR 2023 MILLINERY AUSTRALIA COMMITTEE

Mary is new to the Committee this year. After retiring from her working life as a TAFE Business Administration teacher, she enrolled as a millinery student at the same Institute in Brisbane, where she completed millinery and visual arts qualifications. She, therefore, brings both skill sets to her new role as Treasurer.

Sewing was a family tradition, but it wasn't until Mary retired from full time work that she had the time to indulge her more creative side. Her long term membership of Brisbane Racing inspired her to study millinery so she would have something to wear to the races!

Besides millinery, Mary likes to spend time with her granddaughters, who are now old enough for the car seats to be swapped for “L” plates! She also likes to take long drives around our beautiful country, often towing Cruiser the AVan behind.

MEET YOUR 2023 MILLINERY AUSTRALIA COMMITTEE John MEET YOUR 2023 MILLINERY AUSTRALIA COMMITTEE

John’s millinery career started with their wedding. Made redundant from the kind of office job everyone wants to get away from, they had to save money, so they designed every single piece for the ceremony and have not looked back.

Their signature style is bold, daring and unconventional. Expect unusual colour combinations, unconventional materials, and even breaking the rules of millinery and what is considered a hat. @jwhmillinery is a brand that stands for inclusivity of all colours, races, genders, identities and abilities.

John also produces content for YouTube in which they make videos showing how things are made, so you never know; that piece you buy might just have its own video!

John is returning to the committee for 2023 to look after the association's social media presence.

MEET YOUR 2023 MILLINERY AUSTRALIA COMMITTEE Jo i MEET YOUR 2023 MILLINERY AUSTRALIA COMMITTEE

Jo is a bit of an adrenaline junky; she has her pilot’s licence, has tried skydiving and is about to take her first ride in a WW1 Tiger Moth bi-plane. She had travelled extensively BC (before children and before covid) and worked in Canada and Saudi Arabia. She now calls Melbourne’s beautiful Mornington Peninsula home and with her background in haematology and bone marrow transplant, she works as a clinical nurse specialist in a busy chemotherapy clinic at her local hospital.

Her head is always thinking millinery and there are just not enough hours in the week for her to put her ideas on paper, let alone bring them to fruition. Her biggest millinery thrill to date was winning the inaugural ‘Patron’s Pick’ award in 2019, as chosen by Stephen Jones, with her entry 'Spirograph'. She loves maths and millinery and when they collide, magic happens!

She has been a member of the Millinery Association of Australia since 2016 and served as an ordinary committee member from 2019 – 2021 before taking on the secretary role this year. She is co-editor of the 'Millinery Matters' newsletter, has been the co-host for a number of MAA trivia nights during the various pandemic lockdowns and started the much-enjoyed 'Christmas Bauble Exchange' a few years ago. This year she hopes to continue to foster fun and friendships among members and see the return of some much-anticipated education sessions.
